A History of Modern Sleep

Ever since Heinrich Westphal developed the 1st Inner spring mattress in the late 1800's many types of padding have been tried for comfort and support. For example: Wool, bundled cotton, even Swan, and Goose down. Thus, the Feather bed. These materials, however did not push back for support, but packed down. They offered nowhere near the comfort and support that todays mattresses do. They were far more comfortable than previous mattresses had been though.

Things began to change for the better after 1926 when Dunlop invented a process to make Latex foam from the sap of the Rubber Tree. This natural Latex was the 1st Genuine Foam to me used on innerspring mattresses, and is STILL USED TODAY. In fact, this natural foam lasts longer, and is mort supportive, and comfortable than most if not all other foams. It is generally more expensive because the Rubber Tree is only native to a few countries so It has to be imported. Processing can be expensive too. only 1 inch of it can add considerable comfort. More about this outstanding foam in my next blog.
